Artist: Charles de La Fosse
Artwork: The Sacrifice of Iphigenia
Description: The painting depicts the moment when Iphigenia is about to be sacrificed by her father, Agamemnon. The Greek fleet is anchored at Aulis, and the winds are not blowing. The seer Calchas has declared that Iphigenia must be sacrificed to appease the goddess Artemis. Agamemnon is reluctant to do so, but he eventually agrees. Iphigenia is brought to the altar, and she is about to be killed when Artemis intervenes. She replaces Iphigenia with a deer and takes Iphigenia to Tauris, where she becomes a priestess of Artemis.
