Artwork: The Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple
Description: The Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple is a fresco by the Italian Renaissance artist Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, painted in 1511-12 as part of his commission to decorate the Vatican Stanze. The fresco depicts the story from the Book of 2 Maccabees in which Heliodorus, the treasurer of King Seleucus IV Philopator, attempts to steal the treasures of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. Heliodorus is prevented from doing so by a divine intervention, in which he is whipped by two angels and trampled by a horse.
