Description: This is a preparatory drawing for Poussin’s altarpiece of the same subject, painted in 1657-59 for the church of San Martino ai Monti in Rome. The modello is freely adapted from Raphael’s Entombment (Galleria Borghese, Rome), which Poussin had copied in his youth.
