Description: This is a drawing by Nicolas Poussin, a French painter. The drawing is in red chalk and depicts the story of Pyramus and Thisbe. Pyramus and Thisbe were two young lovers who were forbidden from being together. They decided to run away together and meet under a mulberry tree. Thisbe arrived first and saw a lioness that had just eaten. Thisbe ran away, leaving behind her cloak, which the lioness stained with blood. Pyramus arrived and saw the cloak and thought Thisbe had been killed. He stabbed himself with his sword. Thisbe returned and found Pyramus dying. She then killed herself with his sword.
