Description: In the fall of 1902, Klimt painted a series of four landscapes depicting a birch forest. This was the first time that he had painted a forest, and the first time that he had painted a landscape in such detail. The paintings are all characterized by their dense, almost claustrophobic, depiction of the forest. The trees are tall and slender, and their branches are intertwined in a way that creates a sense of mystery and foreboding.
