Description: Abel Widmer was a Swiss painter and printmaker. He was born in Basel in 1785 and died in Rome in 1867. Widmer studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Basel and then in Paris. He traveled to Italy in 1816 and settled in Rome in 1818. Widmer painted portraits, landscapes, and historical scenes. His work is characterized by its realism and its attention to detail.
